2026 Spring Main Session
CCS302H/Lecture/01 - HONORS Hybrid Genres & Book Making
|
Credits
3.00
Students will make work using hybrid writing genres led by Sara Martin and incorporating those writings into non-traditional book structures led by Tara O'Brien. Hybrid forms include but are not limited to lists inspired by Sei Shonagon’s The Pillow Book, 2nd person vignettes in the tradition of Claudia Rankine’s Citizen and instruction manuals after experimental filmmaker Jon Wilson. Non-traditional book structures will include Flag Books and experimental structures from Claire van Vliet. Students will gain a greater understanding of nuanced genre, how to blur the boundaries of form and learn rules on the page in order to break them. Students will consider the nature of margins, page punctuation and permeability, as well as the impact of font and placement of text on the page. Students will create 2-3 physical projects as well as numerous mockups as sketches for future work.
