The History of Fashion & Costume Design is a 3- credit/ 3-hour lecture course required for Fashion Design Majors. This course reviews key historical periods and movements in fashion design, including their socio-cultural contexts and influences on contemporary fashion trends. Fashion design students will gain an understanding of both Western and non-Western influences beyond the European canon. This course will evaluate the role of fashion in shaping gender, identity, and societal norms throughout different historical eras, and recognize its significance as a form of cultural expression. Students will identify and describe the evolution of fashion technology and production methods over time, from traditional craftsmanship to modern/digital industrial techniques. Above all, this course will develop student’s research and analytical skills through the examination of primary and secondary sources, including archival materials, fashion journals, and academic literature. Students will engage in critical discussions and debates surrounding ethical and sustainable practices within the fashion industry and assess their historical precedents and contemporary relevance.
