2026 Spring Main Session
HU360/Lecture/01 - Ekphrastic Lit: Art in Poetry & Novel | Credits 3.00
In her groundbreaking ekphrastic novel, Optic Nerve, Maria Gainza writes: “Is all decent art a mirror?” Contemplate this question as we read genre-bending novels and poetry inspired by visual art throughout history. Class sessions will analyze and discuss a variety of texts to understand the unique qualities of literature that showcases works of art as entry points for characters, environments, and plot devices. We will celebrate how and why art can be a compelling subject in fiction and poetry and consider the reasons and ways that writers build visual worlds on the page. The course culminates in a creative project where students produce their own piece of ekphrastic literature in the form of a short story, play, or collection of poems.
