2026 Spring Main Session
FN118/Studio/01 - 4D Intro to Lens, Moving, Experien Media | Credits 3.00
This course introduces temporal practices dealing with image, video, animation, sound, performance, and experiential media in the first year. Building on skills acquired in Foundation design, drawing, and Bridge-to-Major courses, students employ cameras and technology to move their work beyond static forms – focusing on experimentation and conceptual investigation. Hands-on exercises, projects, critiques, guest lectures, and field trips aid in fostering narrative & non-linear thinking, hybrid experiences, and audience engagement. Emphasis is placed on developing introductory technical and conceptual fluency to prepare for upper-level study and an understanding of professional best practices. No prior technical experience is required; curiosity and a willingness to experiment are essential. Upon completion of this course students will: - Achieve a basic technical understanding of lens-based, time-based, and interactive media tools and concepts by creating projects that leverage photography, video, sound, performance and basic related software. - Begin to apply theories of media, time, and representation to evaluate the cultural, social, and aesthetic effects of lens-based, and experiential projects. - Use research, experimentation, and iteration to develop art/design/media approaches that investigate time, movement, and audience participation. - Produce and present original time-based/experiential projects supported by clear conceptual consideration, technical execution, and reflective self-assessment.
