2026 Spring Main Session
AH360/Lecture/01 - Latinx/e Art & Culture: 1880-Present | Credits 3.00
This course examines the history of Latinx/e visual art from the late-nineteenth century to the present. Latinx/e is a gender-neutral form of the word Latino/a and comprises multiple identities (Chicana/o, Xicanx, Latina/o, Hispanic, Mexicana/o, Puertoriquena/o, Colombiana/o, Afro-Latine, etc.). stemming from geographic regions in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Major themes and theories related to religion/spirituality, globalization, imperialism/colonization, neo-liberalism, feminism, and joy, will serve as entry points for analysis and discussion. Potential topics include: ongoing definitions and debates about the idea of Latinx/e art and culture, the use of vernacular traditions to create new aesthetic paradigms, the boundaries of embodied identities, reactions to public space and urban life, the border and immigration, and the conditions of art museum reception and exhibition. Although the course will place primary emphasis on the visual arts, we will also briefly reference film, theater, and performance art.
