Credits
3.00
This course provides an overview of art therapy including its history, its role in education, art making and healing, and its professional practice. Special focus will be paid to influential women in this field, including Moore alumna Myra Levick (’63). Students will critically examine connections between the arts and healing through art works, professional literature, and case studies. Varied art activities using trauma-informed practices will be incorporated to illustrate uses of art in therapy as a means of understanding the unconscious self, reflection, conveyance of emotion without words, and the healing power of art making. Students will learn about the variety of settings in which art therapy is practiced to help varied populations, including medical and psychiatric settings, schools, forensic institutions, senior centers, as well as through private practice. Course Objectives: Students will be able to: -understand the history of art therapy, and the role women have played within the development of the profession. -define how and in what ways art therapy is used in K-12 educational settings. -inform personal art work through the discussion of psychological aspects of art making, the release of the unconscious, and self-analysis. -review and analyze professional literature, case studies and current research on ways art therapy can be used with a variety of populations and in diverse settings. - gain knowledge through the creation of a research-, studio-, theory-, diversity-, or education-based presentation and paper as defined by their personal interest in art therapy. -assemble a portfolio of reflective art works and written responses to weekly prompts, readings, and in-class discussions.
