This course introduces students to perpectives on how advancing technologies have impacted cultural awareness, enabled people throughout history to share stories, and shape the way audiences ingest and understand the world. Relying upon screenings and analysis of films from the invention of cinema through to 1970, students will investigate the foundations of filmmaking including, early cinema, international film movements, the studio system and independent filmmaking, while also discussing the evolving perspective and voice of the filmmaker, partially focused on underrepresented communities. Students will write their first theoretical papers within their cohort.
