What are the distinct logistical and ethical challenges of representing ‘real-life’, ‘real people’ or ‘real places’? Students in Documentary I will study, analyze, and create non-fiction film. Through screenings, discussion, exercises and their own short film, students will learn about non-fiction film making. Technical workshops on cameras, sound recording instruments and editing systems will support students in creating a non-fiction film. Course objectives: -Create a short non-fiction film, either an individual or group project as desired. -Demonstrate their ability to shoot, edit and export digital audio and video using cameras, microphones, digital audio recorders (Zoom) and Adobe Premiere Pro. -Analyze theories and histories of non-fiction storytelling. -Discuss and grapple with the many ethical considerations of representation that documentary work can present through screenings, readings and discussions.
