2026 Fall Main Session
FA330/Studio/01 - Fleeting Forms: Exploring Ephemeral Art
|
Credits
3.00
In this course, we will examine how modern and contemporary artists have harnessed intangible and ephemeral materials - such as light, sound, scent, food and other organic matter - to create temporary works of art. Over the course of the semester, you will develop your own series of time-based, sensory-driven works in response to a range of material and thematic prompts. Together we will explore strategies for documenting these fleeting works, as we consider the cultural and political implications associated with this unorthodox approach to art-making. Course Objectives: Over the course of the semester, students will: - research and articulate the historical and contemporary significance of ephemeral art practices - create a series of temporary artworks using impermanent and nontraditional materials - demonstrate an understanding of how the work they produce in class connects to a broader art historical context, through an oral presentation or essay - learn to effectively document temporary works using photography, video, and/or reflective writing
