SEGR635 - Social Practice in Action: Case Studies
This seminar is a critical and historical exploration of the various manifestations of social practice in modern and contemporary art. Focusing on case studies, candidates will critically examine the emergence of the production of social relations in art and explore its contested histories and range of current practice, as well as gain an understanding of current debates over its position and legitimacy within the discipline of art. As a seminar, class sessions will be active dialogically, with close reading and critical examination of case studies serving as portals for engagement with larger issues circulating around social practice: i.e. issues of authorship, context, social responsibility, participant dynamics, etc., thus providing an opportunity for candidates to critically discuss and debate the legitimacy, effectiveness, and strategies manifest within this nebulous approach to contemporary art.
