In this course students work primarily from observed references in order to learn the principles of oil painting. The technical and expressive nature of painting in relation to the subject is explored in depth. Essential aspects of study include value, warm and cool color relationships, spatial tension, composition, control of the medium and overall surface, use of brushwork, and various strategies for building a cohesive painting. Class critiques, art historical and contemporary references, and exposure to works in museums and galleries are important aspects of the class. Development of individual approaches and the use of a variety of subject matter are encouraged. "Art Kit" Materials Purchase - $415
