2024 Fall Main Session
FA409/Lecture/01 - Critical Discourse | Credits 3.00
This course, required of all senior Fine Arts majors, provides the student with essential transitional skills and knowledge needed for the independent production of a cohesive body of work for their Senior Thesis, professional development and the studio life of a practicing fine artist. The primary purpose of this course is to present and examine contemporary critical issues, concepts and language with a view towards aiding the student to understand and define their own role as a working artist in the contemporary art arena. Readings include historic, aesthetic, social, cultural and political issues, as well as practical and professional goals and concerns. Much emphasis is placed on the development of clear, professional and scholarly writing as well as critical thinking. As part of the preparation for the senior thesis project, students will present, write about and discuss their own studio work, toward the development of an Artist Statement. Course work will involve readings, research and critical writing assignments for class discussion and individual presentations that they will respond to on a weekly basis. The class will include possible guest speakers, possible artist studio visit(s) or field trips, slide lectures and presentations of student work in conjunction with written statements. Based on the scope of a student's project or level of study there may be additional costs for materials and supplies. Satisfies: Major Requirement for 2D and 3D Emphasis.
